Investigation of Staphylococcus Species from Anterior Nares of Healthy Individuals in Federal Medical Center Gusau
Abstract
This study aimed to isolate, characterize and determine the antibiogram of
Staphylococcus species isolated from anterior nares of healthy individuals in Barau
Dikko Teaching Hospital. Out of 30 healthy individuals that participated in the study,
17 (56.6%) were males and 13 (43.3%) were females. Of the 30 samples used in the
study, a total of 27 (90%) were cultured positive for both S. aureus and S. epidermidis;
19 (63.3%) were nasal carriers of S. epidermidis and 08 (29.6%) for S. aureus.
Amongst the ten (10) antimicrobials used for sensitivity testing, Ciprofloxacin,
Streptomycin and Septrin show appreciable mean zones of growth inhibition and
followed by Erythromycin, Rocephin, Amoxicillin, Pefloxacin and Gentamicin.
Therefore, they are drugs of choice for treating Staphylococcal infections. Ampiclox
and Zinncef recorded the lowest mean zones of growth inhibition against the tested
organisms indicating a relative resistance.
