Competency Needs of Teachers of Building Drawing in Teaching Building Drawing in Colleges of Education in North Eastern Nigeria

Abstract

The study focused on Competency needs of teachers of Building Drawing in Teaching
Building Drawing in Colleges of Education in North eastern Nigeria. Three research
questions guided the study. Survey research design method was adopted for the study.
The population for the study was 83 Building Drawing teachers in Colleges of
Education in North eastern Nigeria. There was no sampling because the population
was of manageable size. A questionnaire consisting of 42 items was developed and
used for data collection. The questionnaire was face validated by three lecturers from
Department of Industrial Technical Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Cronbach alpha reliability method was involved in determining the internal
consistency of the instrument. A reliability coefficient of 0.81 was obtained. Eighty
three copies of questionnaire were administered to the respondents with the help of
research assistants. All the 83 copies of questionnaire were retrieved and analysed
using the mean and improvement needed index to answer research questions. The
difference between the needed mean and performance mean i.e. (XN –XP) constituted
the gap for which competency is needed by the teachers of Building Drawing. The
researcher recommends among others, that Workshop and seminars should be
organized for teachers of Building Drawing in working drawing, sketching; designing
and computer aided drafting in order to build their competency
