Effects of Ultraviolet Light on Growth and Yield of Tamatoes

Abstract

A greenhouse experiment was conducted in 2017 and 2018 at the Federal
College of Education (Technical) Gombe Research Farm. Gombe, which is
located on 11º02!
Longitude East and 10º19!
latitude North has an average
elevation of 380 meter above sea level. This region belongs to the Northern
Guinea savannah ecological zone of Nigeria. To determine the effect of
Ultraviolet light on the Germination, Growth, and Physiological response of
Tomatoes, Tomatoes seedlings were exposed to different levels of Ultraviolet – B
for 12hours, 6hours and 3hours respectively, three growth parameters were
measured and analysed plant height, number of fruits set, and leaf greenness.
The analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the plant height exposed to the three levels
of UV-B shows a significant variations exist the calculated value of the Plant
height at Ultraviolet-B of 12hours in centimetre (79.2**) is higher than the table
value F Critical (2.5) that shows a highly significant level, and the means were
separated using LSD all the vertical means with the same letter do not differ
significantly at (P=0.005). A negative correlation existed between plant height
and number of fruits set at UV-B level of 12hours (r = -0.695) but positive
correlation exists between plant height and leaf greenness (r = 0.999). Positives
correlation was established between plant height at UV-B level of 6hours and
3hours against number of fruits set and leaf greenness. Graphical presentation of
plant height, number of fruits set, and leaf greenness against UV-B of 12hours,
6hours, and 3hours shows that plants at UV-B of 3hours performed better with
the highest curve. Plant height, leaf greenness, and number of fruits set have
shown a decrease, whereas other Physiological process are difficult to quantify
such as photosynthesis is by and large unaffected by heightened UV-B
illumination under this studies therefore, recognizes the need for further research
on different plants to determine the overall effects on various Physiological
process.
