INFLUENCE OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF AUTOMOBILE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT IN AUTOMOBILE BREAKING, STEERING AND SUSPENSION SYSTEMS IN THE NORTH-EASTERNSTATES TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS OF NIGERIA
The study examined influence of instructional materials on the academic performance of automobile undergraduate students in breaking, steering, and suspension systems. This study made use of Descriptive Survey Research Design. Four tertiary institutions offering automobile technology education were used. The population consists of 90 automobile technology education students and 20 automobile technology teachers. The entire population was used as Sample due to the population size. The instrument used for collection of data was a questionnaire designed by the researchers. The instrument used in this study was vetted by experts in the field of automobile technology education Bauchi to determine the face and content validity of the instrument. The data collected for the pilot study was used to calculate their liability coefficient using split-half method and also Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r), which gave 0.87. Three research questions and three hypotheses (Ho) were formulated to guide the study. Contingency chi-square statistical tool was also used in testing the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The analysis yielded the following findings that; good and relevant textbooks and instructional materials available are to be used to influence students’ academic performance in breaking, steering, and suspension systems. That instructional material should also possess characteristics of visibility, simplicity, attraction, and clarity. In addition instructional materials are important to influence students’ academic performance in breaking steering, and suspension systems. Recommendations were made in line with the findings, which include; automobile technology education teachers should adopt the use animated software as instructional materials for effective teaching of breaking, steering and suspension systems. Government should encourage teachers and instructors to attend conferences, seminars, and workshops on utilization of instructional materials. In conclusion, students perform better when appropriate tools and equipment are made available and being utilized in teaching automobile content.
