Abstract

Achieving inclusive and equitable quality Early Childhood Care and Education calls for Caregivers/Teachers change in their attitudes towards inclusive education. The study explores the attitudes of teachers towards inclusion of special need children in the early childhood care education and discusses intensively inclusive education and its significance at the early childhood care education level to include helping the children with special need to associate freely with their able counterparts, developing them in the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains. The paper further x-rays the rationale for inclusive ECCE, advantages and disadvantages of inclusive ECCE to the special need children and the society at large. Achieving these is not without challenges. Some of the challenges hindering achieving inclusive ECCE in Nigeria as identified in this paper among others include: inadequate relevant teaching and learning materials/equipment and lack of professional trained ECCE Caregivers/ Teachers to manage children in an inclusive learning environment. It is recommended that government, stakeholders and the community should help equip ECCE centres to accommodate the inclusive practice and Caregivers/Teacher should be sponsored through professional trainings via seminars/conferences and further studies to update their knowledge on pedagogies, interests and accept inclusion for a better tomorrow for our special need children at ECCE level in Nigeria.
